The Glass Christmas Tree: A Murano Masterpiece in Venice

This Christmas, the historic Seguso Vetri d’Arte glassworks from Murano has chosen to gift Venice an extraordinary creation: a glass Christmas tree inspired by Venetian chandeliers will illuminate the Church of San Salvador during the holiday season.

Standing 2.5 meters tall and adorned with 40 lights, the tree blends Murano’s artisanal craftsmanship with the warmth of the festive atmosphere, once again demonstrating Venice’s ability to celebrate its artists.

The work is a tribute to St. Nicholas, Santa Klaus, the patron saint of glassmakers, and features numerous symbolic details. The glass lightbulbs evoke the flames of candles, symbolizing the Murano community, its delicate beauty, and its endless “creative flame.” The crystal green recalls purity and tradition, while the red and white candy cane shapes are inspired by the curls of Venetian pastoral chandeliers. Traditional red baubles are mixed with three golden spheres, honoring St. Nicholas, who, according to tradition, gave three gold balls to young women without dowries, enabling them to marry—the first Christmas gift in history!

I wanted to create something that felt like it had always existed, like a breath of Christmas. This tree celebrates Christmas through our art, Murano glass, and the memory of those who came before us. It is a symbol of unity, community, and gratitude, a tribute to our history and to the future. Christmas belongs to everyone, just like the Christmas tree. This creation represents the fruit of our labor, our hard work, teamwork, and connection to our island. It is a celebration of Murano as a living testament to community, faith, and sharing”, says Maestro Pierpaolo Seguso.

From December 15 to January 15, the tree will be on display in the heart of Venice, at San Salvador, celebrating Murano’s timeless art.
