Celotto Afro

celotto

Master Afro Celotto was born in Venice, on the Island of Burano, on August 24, 1963. The island, known for its tranquility and distinctiveness compared to the other Venetian islands, is famous for the brightly colored houses painted by fishermen, which they use as landmarks from the sea. From his childhood, immersed in this world of colors and contrasts, Afro developed a unique artistic sensitivity combined with an innate creative talent.

At just 14 years old, he began working in glassmaking as an apprentice to the renowned master Lino Tagliapietra. During his 12 years of apprenticeship, he had the privilege of learning from one of the greatest living masters of glass, perfecting his technique and gaining a deep understanding of the Venetian artistic glass tradition. In these early years, he produced some of the most exquisite glass artworks, recognized globally for their technical excellence and expressive power.

After his time at “Effetre International,” Afro refined the “Murrina” technique, specializing in two of the most ancient and intricate techniques: filigree and murrine. His skill and versatility became evident, establishing him as one of the leading figures in contemporary Venetian glassmaking. Later, he was invited back to “Effetre International” to replace Lino Tagliapietra, who had moved to the United States to open his own studio.

In 2000, Afro opened his own studio, beginning to create new and original works that reflected a synthesis of tradition and innovation, progressively refining his own style. Around 2004, his works, combining classic techniques with modern forms and vibrant colors, garnered attention from collectors and galleries worldwide, solidifying his reputation in the global art scene.

Throughout his career, Afro has collaborated with prominent glass masters, including the renowned Pino Signoretto, famous for his heavy glass sculptures and a member of the “Dale Chihuly Team.” In 2009, Afro embarked on a new phase of his artistic journey, experimenting with new forms and color combinations, elevating his production to a higher, more innovative, and sophisticated level.
